Wildlife Photography
If you read my “about” section, you may remember that I started my photography journey in the wildlife realm! My bachelor’s degree is in Animal Science, my master’s in Global Sustainability, I am ALL about the natural world and that animals that call it home. The very first wildlife photos I took were in the Galápagos and included incredible species like iguanas, tortoises, sea lions, boobies, and the iconic Sally Lightfoot crab.
Those photos were taken with my Canon Rebel t6i and my favorite-at-the-time 55-250mm f4-5.6 lens. I was learning the basics from NAT GEO photographers and naturalists on board one of their ships cruising the Galápagos. It didn’t get much better than that (especially for a honeymoon!) I caught the bug and knew I wanted to take more wildlife photos. Lucky for me, I also happened to work at the Zoo at the time, so there were plenty of practice subjects, like the orangutans, elephants, zebras, and koalas.
It was also at that time that I got my hands on a 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 lens and (reluctantly, but ultimately happily) leveled up from the t6i to the Canon RP, a mirrorless camera. I don’t think I had made the switch to the RP in time for our trip to Zambia, but I wish I had. Either way, I’m still quite pleased with my photos from our African Safari, especially of the incredible birds like the Kingfisher and Bee eater, below. (Oh yeah, and we saw leopards too!! **Squeal**) (Also baby elephant.) Africa is magical, y’all.
And I hope to continue making magic with my wildlife photos, whether its inspiring someone to care about the plight of an endangered species or simply giving someone a piece of art to hang in their home. Many of the photos that are in this blog are available for purchase at my print shop in various print sizes and options like canvases and metal prints.
